I'm considering starting spironlactone. I would appreciate any feedback. Thank you.

I googled spironlactone & acne and there were several articles.

The concensus is that it doesn't inceased acne but there are always those that might say otherwise.

I personally think that there is a wide spectrum of things that could help with Acne, and that may not be a good choice.

That drug was found to be carcinogenic in rats, and what worries me is it is a steroid. The only thing that I can say is talk to you doctor, and if he/she feels that it is right for you, then be careful.

If you choose to go that route make sure you check with your doctor about side effects.

I've never heard of this treatment, but from what others are saying I'd check all your other options first before going with that.

I've never heard of it, but I'm on another antibiotic, Doryx and the only time I ever have minor breakouts are during that time of the month (obviously) and when I take dairy with it.

Hi. Coming out of lurkdom to answer this. I have been on Spiro for almost 3 months...it has been amazing for me. I am in my late 40's and my skin became an oil slick with constant monthly breakouts especially whiteheads. Initially, I had a headache for about 3 days until my body got used to Spiro. My oil production has been drastically reduced and I get very few whiteheads and if I do get them they are very very small and last a day or so. I take 100 mg in the morning with milk. My health is fine and I am very happy my doctor mentioned Spiro to me. It may not be for everyone but I love it.

If you have hormonal acne, have you considered birth control? For a lot of women it helps. If you've done that then yeah, an antibiotic works, but like everything else, BC (or an antibitoic) doesn't clear acne forever...it usually comes back when you stop. Of course, the exception is Accutane and can definitely clear acne for good in some cases, but not all.

Hola

I was on spiro for months and it really helped me. I never knew that it could cause liver damage and coz I've been on Roaccutane 5 times prior to that (!!!!!) maybe it wasn't good for my liver.

I found I got really bad heartburn when I took it which is why I stopped using it. But I just read another member's post (above) and she said she takes it with milk, maybe that is coz of the heartburn.

Check it out cause it was good, and now I know about the milk I might try again.

Also check out my other comments about clearskincare, ASAP scrub, retin-A, hydroquinone and MMU.

Cheers!

never heard of it. but if it's hormonal, just check with an endocrinologist.i did, and my skin has a lot improved.

I don't know, it's only acne. It's not worth it to risk your liver. I had hormonal acne last year and it was REALLY bad on my forehead. Nothing topical would work. I just waited it out and stopped eating junkfood, drank lots of water, and stopped using acne medication on face. My skin is almost back to normal. Whatever you decide, good luck!

Here is an except from a booklet I have:

Spironolactone

Advantages: effectively blocks male hormone effects in the body (that contribute to acne), often improves premenstrual depression, slightly improves insulin resistance.

Disadvantages: Often causes frequent menstrual bleeding, can cause a build-up of potassium in the blood (usually only in the elderly, in those with poor kidney function or those taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain killing drugs for arthritis). Blood potassium must be checked 3-4 weeks after staring treatment or after increasing the dose. Cannot be taken during pregnancy.

HI!

I have been on this for less than a month. My doctor went over all of the possible side effects, and included the ones that he said they wont have listed on the paperwork that you get with your pills. Lightheadedness being the one I remember he stressed the most. He also said the dosage he was giving me was smaller in comparison to the ones that cause the big side effects.

Also because I wasnt sure how I would react to them (after hearing the long list of effects), I did only take a half of a pill for a lttle over a week before taking the whole pill.

So you just need to feel comfortable about taking it and be aware of everything it can cause, and see what the dosage is that your doctor is prescribing you.

He did say it could be about 6 weeks to see real results, I think I see small results now, the best result is no new huge non popable bumps on my chin since I have started taking this.

Hope this helps and good luck. I know how frustrating it is to want to try anything, but not at the risk of your health.
